Patients undergoing hernia surgery can be discharged home on the evening of surgery or may stay overnight depending on their recovery from anaesthesia and some other circumstances such as the type of hernia for which they underwent surgery.

After surgery care and instructions:

• Please do not lift heavy weights (greater than 2 supermarket shopping bags) for 6 weeks after surgery.
• Return to work and normal activities will depend on the type of hernia, the type of surgery and the type of activity. Generally speaking -If you have had an open operation for simple groin and abdominal wall hernias- you will need around 1 week off work.
